Discernment as a Candidate for Lay Formation
Are you a good candidate for participation in the Lay Formation experience? Here are some things to think about if you are considering participation in Lay Formation. Before you decide for sure, consult with family members and friends who know you well;
consult with a spiritual guide, a parish staff member or your pastor; visit with individuals in your parish who have participated in the Lay Formation experience; and spend a sufficient time in prayerful discernment.
- How willing are you to commit yourself once a month (exception is twice a month in October) for an all day session on a Saturday for three years?
- How willing are you to read books and handouts?
- How willing are you to reflect on what you have read and heard from speakers?
- How willing are you to write a monthly reflection paper?
- How willing are you to be an active listener?
- How open are you to being involved with a small faith sharing group?
- How open are you to persons of diverse backgrounds (gender, age, race/ethnicity, education, and careers)?
- How open are you to accept and discuss ideas that you may not agree with? Are you willing to be stretched in your understanding of church, ministry, religion and faith?
- How interested are you in and tolerant of a range of legitimate positions on theological matters?
- How open and willing are you to change and grow in your faith?
- How do you commit yourself to praying regularly?
- How willing are you to have a spiritual director/companion for three years or more?
- How willing are you to attend a retreat weekend once a year in September?
- How willing are you to discern your gifts/chrisms personally and with others?
- How involved are you in your parish/church?
- How willing are you to meet with your pastor/parish administrator to evaluate the
year (for each of the three years)?
